Donald Trump and Ted Cruz's war of words on Twitter seemed to escalate overnight, with Cruz warning the billionaire businessman not to "attack women" after Trump retweeted an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz.

The back-and-forth between Trump and Cruz prompted former Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush to endorse Cruz, citing the "divisiveness and vulgarity" that Trump brings.

On Tuesday, Trump published, deleted, and reposted -- adding correct spelling and punctuation -- a tweet accusing Cruz's campaign of launching an ad that used photos from a nude photo shoot Melania Trump did for GQ in 2000.

The ad, though, was not paid for by Cruz's campaign. Instead it was launched by the super PAC Make America Awesome and was targeted to Mormon voters, according to strategist Liz Mair.

The Cruz campaign denied involvement with the ad and on Tuesday called Trump a "coward" for attacking Heidi Cruz.

Heidi Cruz is a businesswoman who worked in the administration of George W. Bush. She took a leave of absence from her job at Goldman Sachs to support her husband's presidential campaign.

Cruz on Wednesday said that his wife was not scared "one iota by a bellowing Donald Trump."

Also not impressed with Trump: Fox News' Megyn Kelly, with whom the businessman has feuded throughout the campaign.

An equally pointed response came from Senator Barbara Boxer from California.

Trump's Twitter policy, as much as there is one, has been that retweets are not endorsements.
