On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan stood at a podium in the then-divided city of Berlin and famously demanded that Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev "tear down this wall."

Nearly 29 years later, on June 6, 2016, Rep. Filemon Vela, Jr. of Texas published an open letter to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, in which he invited the reality TV star to take his theoretical wall along the southern border of the United States and "shove it up your ass."

Welcome, dear reader, to the latest bizarre footnote of the 2016 presidential election.

Vela called Trump a racist in his letter, and said that Trump's hostility toward "one of our largest trading partners, is frankly astounding and asinine."

He also said he'd like to end his letter in "a more diplomatic fashion," but figured that Trump -- given the candidate's rhetoric -- would probably understand.

There has not yet been any response from Trump. But Gorbachev did allow the Berlin Wall to be torn down two years after Reagan said those words -- so there may be hope for Vela's proposal yet.
