It was only a few months ago that the Eiffel Tower went dark in a symbol of mourning as Paris was reeling from its own terror attacks. On Tuesday evening, it turned into a symbol of solidarity, this time for Belgium

Illuminated in yellow, red and black, the world's most iconic structures took on the colors of the Belgian flag, after at least 31 people were killed and scores more injured in attacks at the city's airport and a busy metro station during rush hour.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted a photo of the tower after night fell on the city.

Elsewhere in Europe and the Middle East, cities also stood with Brussels. In Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was illuminated in the Belgian flag, another symbol of defiance from a neighboring country.

And in Italy, the Belgian flag was projected on Rome's historical Trevi Fountain.
