A word from 'The Simpsons' made it into the Merriam-Webster dictionary

What took them so long?

Are you familiar with the words that adorn the statue of Jebediah Springfield?

In the Simpsons episode "Lisa the Iconoclast," the children of Springfield are shown a video telling the story of the town's founder, Jebediah Springfield. In the propaganda film, Springfield speaks these immortal words.

"A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man."

The children cheer, and teacher Edna Krabappel says:

To which fellow teacher Miss Hoover replies:

Cromulent or not, embiggen has been entered into the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

It's pretty galling that Jebediah doesn't get a mention, although Merriam-Webster does put the first usage in 1996, which is when "Lisa the Iconoclast" aired.

Still, credit where credit is due. Lots of people showed their appreciation for the legitimisation of embiggen.

It's up to you now Merriam-Webster, do the right thing. Bring in cromulent.
