On International Women's Day, workers step out to make a statement.

A whole lot of women went on strike Wednesday.

From media companies in the United States to childcare centers in Australia, women around the world took the day off to make a statement.

Plenty of men are tweeting about what it's like being surrounded by a bunch of empty rooms and desks.

In other words, they are noticing that, yes, women really do run the world.

It was just a little over a month ago that organizers of the Women's March -- which drew millions to protest Donald Trump's inauguration -- announced they would be organizing a general strike on March 8, International Women's Day.

The cause? A fight for much-needed wage equality, an end to violence against women, and a general pursuit of fair rights.

Some businesses and nonprofits were proud to share just how impacted their workplaces were by the strikes.

Media sites like Bustle and New York Magazine's The Cut aren't publishing any new content for a full 24 hours, while a number of companies tweeted they would be closed for the day.
