Two English football fans have been detained after a fight erupted in the French city of Marseille ahead of the first games of the Euro 2016 championship.

French riot police used tear gas to break up the brawl, which flared outside a pub in the city's Old Port district. French interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet confirmed the arrests and said the government will ensure extra security around Marseille fan areas on the opening night of the competition.

He said one fan was arrested for assaulting a barman and the other for violent disorder.

The governing body of football in Europe UEFA released a statement after the clash saying it "regrets the skirmishes."

"We are confident that the safety of travelling fans will be ensured by the local authorities which are responsible for order in the city. We make an appeal for all fans to behave respectfully throughout the tournament."

Between 350,000 and 500,000 fans are expected to travel to follow England, Northern Ireland and Wales during the competition, according to assistant chief constable Mark Roberts.
