Chinese fans of popular nine-member K-pop boyband Exo were left disappointed and fuming when they turned up at Shanghai Gymnasium in China on Sunday to watch their favourite band perform a 3-hour concert -- only to get a measly 30-minute performance instead.

Each fan paid at least 4,000 yuan ($617) per ticket for the "K-Friends" concert. Front row seats even sold for 10,000 yuan ($1,500).

But fans were outraged when the band only went on stage for 30 minutes to perform five songs. Also, only eight members of the band were at the show -- the show billing said all members would be present.

According to Allkpop.com, the organisers of the concert had promised fans a 3-hour show, during which the boyband would perform at least 10 of their hit songs.

Exo often plays to sold out concerts in Asia. Thanks to Chinese voters, the band won the Weibo Global Fan's Choice Male Group prize at the Mnet Asian Music Awards last year.

Videos that have surfaced on the Internet on the day of the "K-Friends" concert shows an angry mob ready to start a riot when the band finished their performance.

Unhappy fans have since taken to their Weibo accounts to vent their feelings about the poorly organised and misleading concert. Many have also demanded refunds.

Shanghai's culture administration has ordered the organisers to pay out the refunds, but they can only be made in person in Shanghai, reported South China Morning Post.

UPDATE: March 30, 2016, 6:26 p.m. SGT An earlier version of this story stated the number of Exo members as 12.
