Social media companies really want you to know that it's 'Brexit' voting day

LONDON -- On the day of the historic referendum in the UK to decide whether the country should stay in the European Union or leave, major social media companies are encouraging people to get to the polls and vote. 

With more than 46 million registered to vote, the turnout will be key in deciding the future of Britain in its membership of the EU. 

Twitter told users to tweet using #iVoted to unlock a special election emoji:

The hashtag quickly started trending in the UK along with other topics linked to the referendum:

Many UK politicians, journalists and simple voters used #iVoted in their posts:






People eligible to vote in the referendum also saw an update in their Facebook newsfeed reminding them to vote. As in the previous elections, voters could share a post saying they have voted:

Google also put a message reminding Brits to get out and vote. "Time to vote. The UK’s EU referendum happens today," reads the update on Google.co.uk:
