In Nov. 2019, Facebook quietly launched a meme-making app called Whale.

The app was launched through Facebook's NPE (New Product Experimentation) group, which tries and tests out new things — and often scraps them mere months after they've been launched.

Whale, however, is still alive and kicking, and it just got a pretty important update. The app now has support for GIF memes, private meme-sharing groups, as well as a library of top meme templates.

Facebook has also signed up several popular meme creators to start creating memes through Whale, allowing users to post their memes to their groups for a chance to get a nod from the masters.

Other features of note include magic filters and a face insertion tool. Facebook claims the app's early testers said that Whale's creative tools are the easiest they've used.

Judging by this update, Whale won't suffer the fate of another NPE project called Hobbi which was launched in February and shut down in July. TikTok competitor Lasso, another NPE project, was around for a bit longer but was also shut down in July 2020.

Whale is available for free on Apple's iOS App Store, but only in the U.S. and Canada. The app also has its own Instagram page where it posts (you guessed it) memes.
