Fall movie preview: What to watch if you want to feel some feels
Welcome to our 2018 fall movie preview. We'll be coming at you all week with the movies you need to know over the next few months – starting today with what to see if you want to get your emotions running high.
We'd be lying if we said we weren't a little sad to see this summer come to an end. But if there's one thing we can take comfort in, it's that this means the fall movie slate is almost upon us.
This is the season of awards hopefuls, for indie oddities, for holiday crowdpleasers. It's the best time of year to round up the family for a warm and fuzzy cartoon, or ditch them all for a festival-circuit fave that's like nothing you've ever seen before.
We're getting kind of emotional just thinking about the good times ahead, in fact – so let's get started today with the films to see if you want to feel the feels...
... and you're a Robert Redford fan: The Old Man and the Gun (September 28)
An incredible six-decade career comes to an end this fall, as Robert Redford returns to the screen for his final role before retirement. Directed by David Lowery, The Old Man and the Gun stars Redford as a real-life career criminal and escape artist still going strong in his 70s. What a note to go out on, for the man once best known as the Sundance Kid.
... and you can't resist a good soundtrack: A Star is Born (October 5)
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga make sweet, sweet music together in A Star is Born, the third remake of the 1937 classic. Once again, an aging star (Cooper) meets and falls for a promising talent (Gaga), just as her career is on the rise and his is in decline. Expect lots of passion, tons of angst, and an entire soundtrack's worth of songs you won't be able to get out of your head for days afterward.
... but you're not looking for an escape: The Hate U Give (October 19)
Based on the acclaimed bestseller by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give follows a black teenager (Amandla Stenberg) who becomes an activist after her best friend is shot and killed by police. This isn't a movie you watch to get away from the real world – it's one you watch to think about the real-life heartbreaks and complicated issues surrounding us every day.
... and more specifically, you want to feel scared: Halloween (October 19)
Like most long-running horror series, the Halloween franchise has been hit or miss. Thankfully, this one looks like a winner, bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode for some much-deserved vengeance. Unfortunately for her but fortunately for us, it looks like he's going to put up one hell of a fight before she gets it.
... and you're a sucker for sports dramas: Creed II (November 21)
Like we were ever not going to show up for the sequel to Creed, one of the best sports dramas in recent memory. Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis, with Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa and Tessa Thompson's Bianca still in his corner. And he's going to need them, as he prepares for the fight of his life against Ivan Drago Jr. – the son of the man who killed his father in the ring.
