Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan undertook an overnight train journey from Mumbai to Delhi to promote his upcoming film Raees that hits theaters tomorrow. It is said that the 'Raees By Rail' promotional activity was actually imitating a sequence from the film.

But his plans were derailed in Vadodara, a town in the western Indian state of Gujarat where the film is set.

In a tragic turn of events, a fan lost his life in a stampede at the station. He succumbed in the sea of humanity gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the iconic actor. The deceased has been identified as a local politician, Farid Khan Pathan, the Press Trust of India reported. Two policemen stationed in the area were injured as well.

Commotion ensued as soon as Khan's train arrived and the local police had to resort to lathi charge to control unruly crowds. A cop reportedly said: "The crowd went berserk when the train halted and began banging its window panes and even falling on top of each other... When the train started moving, people started running along with it."

India's obsession with movie stars borders on the unhealthy and marketing gimmicks such as #RaeesByRail pulled off by film studios are proving to be costly.

Only about a week ago, a similar incident had occurred where a fan of a popular South Indian actor Ram Charan died in a stampede outside a theater.

But the Raees incident has cooked up a storm on social media.

More railway stations witnessed similar scenes on Tuesday morning.

The actor later condoled the death of the man and said: "It is extremely unfortunate that someone has died... Our team was there all along, tragic that such an incident still took place."
