Gather round, fellow adults and let me tell you a tale about fan fiction.

While there are plenty of fan fiction websites on the internet (this is 2016, after all) perhaps one of the most popular, especially with teens, is the fan fiction social media platform Wattpad, which just celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Thus far, there have been over 300 million stories uploaded to Wattpad with a community of about 45 million active users.

J.K Rowling's Wizarding World had a pretty huge 2016, so, because we care, we reached out to the team over there to give us the lowdown on what people were writing about from the magical land of Harry Potter. Some results aren't too surprising: Hogwarts was far and away the most popular location for HP stories not just in 2016, but in years past as well.

The most popular HP character (in English-language stories) in 2016 was Harry Potter (natch), followed by Draco Malfoy and then Hermione Granger. Remus Lupin ranked surprisingly high at No. 4, with Ron Weasley back at No. 5. No one was forgotten: There were 50 stories written about Goyle this year, as well as Crabbe with 43...enough for a Top 30 finish. If they were mentioned in Rowling's work, it's a safe assumption that someone, somewhere is reading a complex tale about them right now.

Below, the 15 most popular Harry Potter ships/pairings in Wattpad stories in 2016. (Please note the inclusion of "Scorbus" aka Scorpius Malfoy and Albus Potter. It's safe to say we can point to the July release of Cursed Child for that one.)

No. 1 will surprise you only if you've never been on the internet.

We're all big Harry Potter fans here, but there was plenty of non-Potter news going on in fanfic this year as well. Below, the most popular general topic tags of 2016 from Wattpad.

Spoiler alert: It's all boy bands, all the time. Harry Styles managed to reclaim his 2014 title back in 2016, after slipping to second place in 2015. We're sure he's so proud.

Because we know you're wondering: Zayn Malik dropped down to No. 21 this year from a No. 11 ranking in 2015. That's what happens when you leave One Direction, apparently.
