Chinese-backed Tesla rival Faraday Future (or FF, as it likes to be called) has reportedly received the green light from California to test driverless cars in the state.

California granted the Los Angeles-based electric vehicle startup official approval to begin testing autonomous cars on public roadways on June 17th, a Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson confirmed to Reuters.

FF joins 13 other companies that have been approved by California for autonomous car testing, including Google, Tesla and Cruise Automation -- now owned by General Motors.

However, if you're a California resident and hoping to see something like the company's concept, the FFZERO1 that debuted at CES this year, cruising the freeways, you're likely out of luck.

Likely, the company will be testing a nondescript mule -- an industry term for a car that has the technical components of a future model, such as the powertrain, the suspension, the electrical architecture, the battery and the control system. However, it doesn't necessarily have the production exterior components.

In fact, FF has been testing its first production model for over a year. And you've not noticed that one yet. So chances are good you won't recognize the autonomous one either.
