When Fargo returns to FX in April, the show will be more contemporary than viewers are used to.

The third season is set in 2010, meaning technology will play more of a role in Eden Valley, Minnesota. While the setting is retro -- everything from the rooms and the cars -- the characters are taking selfies on their iPhones.

“2010’s really contemporary for us,” executive producer Warren Littlefield said during the show's Television Critics Association presentation Thursday. “[Creator] Noah [Hawley] is enjoying that technology, in many ways, is supposed to unite, and perhaps that’s not what happens at all."

For example, Littlefield said Carrie Coon's character Sheriff Gloria Burgle has a scene where she’s on a plane "and she notices everyone around her has their heads down and their face in their phone, and no one is communicating, no one’s talking."

"Noah’s going to have a lot of fun commenting and embracing the world as it is, almost today,” Littlefield said.

There may be some connections to previous seasons -- which were linked by the Solverson family -- but Littlefield wouldn't give too much away.

“Noah is very focused on not repeating himself,” he said. “There will be a kiss with the past, but I could not tell you here today (what it will be).”

Littlefield was joined by cast members Ewan McGregor (who plays twins Emmit and Ray Stussy), Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who plays Ray's girlfriend Nikki Swango), David Thewlis (who plays V.M. Vargas) and Michael Stuhlbarg (who plays Emmit's business partner Sy Feltz).

The cast couldn't reveal too much about the show, though FX did tease a reel of early footage. So far, the cast has been filming for four days in very cold Calgary, Alberta.

For McGregor, the hardest part about getting into character has been mastering the Midwest accent.

"I am doing the Fargo-y accent," he said. "I've had the chance to put both [character] brothers on camera now. The challenge is to master that accent, which is very quite difficult. It's the hardest accent I've ever done. And I did Dutch once. This is worse."
