An episode of the British cartoon Fireman Sam has been withdrawn from a streaming site after it was found that a character appears to step on a page of the Quran.

In the scene, broadcast in October 2014 on Channel 5 but only brought to attention this week, a fireman called Elvis is seen treading on a pile of papers while carrying a tray of drinks. As sheets fly into the air, a page from the Quran is "briefly depicted," Mattel said.

"The page was intended to show illegible text and we deeply regret this error. We sincerely apologise for any distress or offense it may have caused," the production firm said.

"We will no longer be working with the animation studio responsible for this mistake. In addition, we are taking immediate action to remove this episode from circulation and we are reviewing our content production procedures to ensure this never happens again."

Miqdaad Versi, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, identified on Twitter the page as Surah Mulk (67), verses 13-26:

"I have no idea what went through the producers' minds when they thought this was a good idea #baffled," he said.
