LONDON -- Flash floods caused by thundery showers have turned a street in southeast London practically into a canal, with three cars completely submerged under a bridge.

The incident took place in Wallington after a huge amount of rain fell within minutes.

London Fire Brigade were called to help rescue three people from their cars.

"London Fire Brigade has been called to a number of flash flooding and lightning strike calls in southeast London between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.," it said in a statement.

"The most significant incident was three cars flooded to the depth of two metres on Manor Road in Wallington. Two people were assisted from their cars before the arrival of the Brigade, and a third person was rescued by firefighters."

The Met Office, meanwhile, said that London experienced 40 mm of rain in an hour.

Part of Purley Way was also closed due to flooding.

Other calls were made after a person was trapped in a car in Coulsdon and smoke was reported coming from a building in Croydon, south London, after a lighting strike.

Emergency services were also called in Hackney after a roof caught fire. It is unclear whether lightning is to blame.
