Three top officials were charged in the state of Michigan on Wednesday with crimes related to Flint's water crisis.

The officials named were Stephen Busch, a district supervisor in the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance; Mike Prysby, who also works for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; and Mike Glasgow, who oversaw Flint's water quality.

Prysby was also charged with misconduct in office, in addition to tampering with evidence.

The charges come amid a Michigan attorney general investigation into how city and state officials did little to address resident concerns that water coming into their homes was not drinkable.

Flint's water crisis began in April, 2014, when the city switched its water supply to the Flint River. The river water was more corrosive, which leached lead from the pipes into the water supply and caused toxic levels of lead to come out of the faucets of some homes.

These criminal charges allege that officials deliberately tested water in homes where pipes were not likely to leach lead and therefore were not at risk like other homes in the city.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has not yet been implicated in the cover-up, though Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have said he should resign

The attorney general's investigation is ongoing.
