For the second year in a row, Johnny Depp's films can barely justify his paycheck. We know that famous actors can make tens of millions of dollars for their work, but the understanding of those who pay them is that the movies will earn it back -- in a big way.

That wasn't the case for Depp, the year's most overpaid actor according to Forbes; Depp's films made $2.80 for every dollar he was paid. He and other big-name stars had films' fates riding on their bankability and didn't always deliver to the extent producers wanted, though, to be fair, Depp's movies are bringing in more than he makes.

Depp's now tied to the Harry Potter universe's Fantastic Beasts saga, which earned a steady box office but nothing like the original films -- and the second film in that franchise won't reach theaters until 2018. Other than Depp, the only actor to "win" this dubious distinction two years in a row is Adam Sandler (who makes an appearance at #6 this year).

Forbes took into account the last three films an actor appeared as a significant part in before June 2016 and then subtracted the production budget from the box office totals. The actors' pay rates are estimated and then deduced to reach a final number.

  1. Johnny Depp, returns $2.80 for each $1 paid

  2. Will Smith, returns $5 for each $1 paid

  3. Channing Tatum, returns $6 for each $1 paid

  4. Will Ferrell, returns $6.50 for each $1 paid

  5. George Clooney, returns $6.70 for each $1 paid

  6. Adam Sandler, returns $7.60 for each $1 paid

  7. Mark Wahlberg, returns $9.20 for each $1 paid

  8. Leonardo DiCaprio, returns $9.90 for each $1 paid

  9. Julia Roberts, returns $10.80 for each $1 paid

  10. Bradley Cooper, returns $12.10 for each $1 paid
