A high-speed Formula 1 crash from the driver's point of view is truly terrifying
A crash during an ultra high-speed race like the Formula 1 can be extremely dramatic and dangerous, with sparks flying and smoke covering the drivers.
On Sunday's night race on the streets of rain-soaked Singapore, three drivers crashed out in large part due to the slick conditions.
The crash took out the first two drivers on the grid -- Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who swung into the second driver, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Vettel also hit teammate Kimi Raikkonen, in the three-car collision.
The crash ultimately resulted in a surprise win for Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who started in fifth position.
"I capitalised on the incident -- who would have known that would happen? It was really unfortunate for the Ferraris but a great result for [Mercedes]," he was quoted as saying during his podium speech.
Formula 1 cars reach speeds of around 350 km/h (217 mph) in a race. No one was hurt in the crash, and race judges decided no one was to blame, and did not mete out any penalties.
