LONDON -- A British police force has shared the trail of selfies and images that led directly to the arrests and sentencing of two men who stole money from fruit machines (slot machines) across the UK.

North Yorkshire Police took to Facebook on Monday -- the day the men were sentenced -- to share details of the case.

Benjamin James Robinson, 29, and Daniel Mervin William, 24, were sentenced to 32 months and six months (suspended for two years) respectively.

They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal in November 2015, after they were initially stopped in June 2014 and found with balaclavas, a screwdriver and £2,000 in cash.

"We knew we hit the jackpot when we investigated these lemons," said Detective Chief Inspector Matt Walker.

"Their greed, arrogance and affinity for 'selfies' proved to be their downfall."

"These offenders carried out a string of crimes with no thought for the businesses they were targeting -- but ultimately their greed, arrogance and affinity for 'selfies' proved to be their downfall."

Walker went on to say that the investigation showed that they were targeting fruit machines around the country.

"It sends out a clear message that anyone travelling into North Yorkshire to commit crime will be caught and brought to justice," he said.
