The sprawling, interconnected storylines of Game of Thrones can sometimes be confusing for even the most dedicated viewer, so it's reassuring to know that sometimes the cast struggles to keep up with the plot twists just as much as we do.

Stephen Dillane, who played Stannis Baratheon from Season 2 through Season 5 of the HBO hit, recently revealed to the UK's Times newspaper (via io9) that he had a hard time understanding what his scenes were about, often relying on his co-star Liam Cunningham (aka Davos Seaworth) to explain what was going on.

"Liam Cunningham is so passionate about the show. He invests in it in a way I think is quite moving, but it wasn't my experience," Dillane revealed while promoting his new UK drama The Tunnel.

"I was entirely dependent on Liam to tell me what the scenes were about -- I didn't know what I was doing until we'd finished filming and it was too late. The damage had been done," he added.

His lack of confidence with the material apparently left Dillane feeling quite insecure about his role, he admitted: "I thought no one would believe in me and I was rather disheartened by the end. I felt I'd built the castle on non-existent foundations."

After Stannis was killed off in Season 5, Dillane said he attempted to watch the show, "to see if I could figure out what was going on, but I couldn't."

Maybe he'd have better luck with the books?
