'Game of Thrones' wins Emmy for Drama Series because of course it did
As surely as winter is coming, so too was Game of Thrones Emmy win for Outstanding Drama Series.
It was a big night for the HBO hit, which went into the 68th Annual Emmy Awards with 24 nominations. It was the most for any series, with a one-nomination lead over The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
Game of Thrones scooped a total of 12 awards when all was said and done, bringing its overall total to 38 wins -- breaking a record set by Frasier to make it the most awarded scripted series in Emmy history.

The TV adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy books was a heavy favorite to show well at the 2016 Emmys after a sixth season full of surprises. It's the second Outstanding Series win in as many years for Game of Thrones, which hadn't taken the top prize prior to 2015.
The HBO series swept up a number of big awards throughout the night, including an Outstanding Writing win for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The two have written many of the series' episodes, and they secured an Emmy for the pivotal Season 6 episode, "Battle of the Bastards."
The "Bastards" episode also picked up a win for Outstanding Directing, the first such achievement for director Miguel Sapochnik, who got a shout-out earlier in the night from Benioff: "If the world was fair, every writer would have Miguel Sapochnik directing their episode."
Although it was the hands-down favorite, HBO faced stiff competition in a category filled with crowd-pleasers The Americans, Better Call Saul, House of Cards, Downton Abbey, Homeland and Mr. Robot were all in the mix.
But remember: "When you play the game of thrones you win or you die."
