What's up with the song in the new 'Game of Thrones' trailer?

It's a little on-the-nose for a show about a powerful chair to use the song "Sit Down" in a trailer, but that's what Game of Thrones did to us with the latest taste of Season 7.

The song, by British rock outfit James, plays over slow-motion footage of Cersei (Lena Headey), Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Jon (Kit Harington) seating themselves in turn at the Iron Throne.

For reference, the original "Sit Down" video is...nothing like this promo:

It seems an unconventional choice, but the lyrics are more Thrones-y than you'd think:

I sing myself to sleep A song from the darkest hour Secrets I can't keep In sight of the day Swing from high to deep Extremes of sweet and sour Hope that God exists I hope, I pray

Drawn by the undertow My life is out of control I believe this wave will bear my weight So let it flow

Oh sit down Oh sit down Oh sit down Sit down next to me Sit down, down, down, down, down In sympathy

Mashable editor Kate Sommers-Dawes said it "kinda kilt the mood for me tbh," while one of Mashable's preeminent nerds Chris Taylor said it "adds nothing" and felt like iTunes had accidentally started playing music from his computer.

James member Tim Booth was, naturally, highly in favor of the use:

It does sound like a cover, but HBO confirmed that it is an echoey, eerie version of the original.

"Having read the books, and watched the series twice, I was very excited when Game Of Thrones asked to use 'Sit Down' for their preview," Booth said in a statement. "I think the last two songs used were 'Heroes' and 'Wicked Game' -- so we are in great company. We thought they would make their own version, to suit the landscape of the series, but apparently, they were attached to the original."

Since we're going with literal songs, may we suggest some for future promos? How about this perfect Cersei song to match that breath of cold air she released:

Or maybe this power anthem for the Night King:

One thing is for sure -- no one will be sitting down next to anyone on the Iron Throne.
