'Game of Thrones' creators reveal final season's episode run and we're devastated

All shows must die. We just wish Game of Thrones could hang on a little longer.

On Sunday, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed the news at South by Southwest: the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will contain only six episodes.

That will come after Season 7 (premiering July 16), which will be only seven episodes, down from the usual 10.

On the plus, the showrunners feel pretty good about how they're ending things.

"We’ve had, from the beginning, a sense of… from the very first time we pitched this show to HBO, we wanted to tell one 70 hour movie – it’s gonna turn out to be 73 hours, but still, it’s stayed relatively the same in terms of the beginning, the middle and now we’re coming to the end," Benioff admitted. "It would’ve been tough if we’d lost any of the core cast members along the way, so I’m very happy that we’ve kept everyone together and we get to finish it the way we wanted to."

Benioff and Weiss also gave the audience some insight into their writing process during the SXSW panel -- which was moderated by Game of Thrones stars Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark).

The showrunners said that they're currently in the process of breaking the story for Season 8 and that they've found the task a lot more difficult than usual because they know the show is ending.

"We have two other writers on the staff, Brian Cogman and Dave Hill," Benioff explained. "The four of us get together in a room, we break down the upcoming season, then we split up and write different sections of the outline. We have the last one we'll ever do, for Season 8, which is a little sad, so we have an 140 page outline for ... it's only gonna be six episodes for the final season, then we divvy up the episodes."

"Dave Hill will write the season premiere, Brian Cogman will write 802 and then we'll write the other four," Benioff continued. "Dan and I just pick halves; we fight over who gets to write which half, who gets to kill Sansa ..."

"We both wanted to kill Sansa so bad," Weiss agreed, mostly just to troll Turner.

"Usually it took two minutes to divide the halves, this time it was 18 back and forth emails: 'I'll take this scene if you take that scene,'" Benioff admitted. "Because we realized it was the last time we'd be doing this for this show."

Yes, we're devastated, too. That means you only have 13 total episodes left with your favorite characters, unless they get brutally murdered right away, which is totally a possibility. (Sorry, Sansa?)

Will the show answer all our burning questions in that short of a time period? Like, who is Azor Ahai? Will Jon ever learn the truth about his parents? And what's up with Hot Pie and Ser Pounce?

Honestly, who cares. What's the point in anything anymore? I guess we'll watch Westworld. Yeah, that sounds OK.
