'Game of Thrones' theory thinks Winterfell's crypt is major foreshadowing — and it's bad news

Seriously though, does NO ONE in Winterfell see how terrible this plan is?

Things are going to get very bad, very quickly in the third episode of Game of Thrones final season. But what if the threat is already inside the house?

Spoilers, obviously, for anyone who hasn't yet caught Episode 2.

By now we know that everyone we care about who's not named Cersei Lannister or Euron Greyjoy has converged on Winterfell. They're ready for battle, with a plan that involves having the main force keep the White Walker army at bay while a smaller crew baits the Night King and tries to cut off the head of the snake.

The main force includes virtually everyone who's currently chilling out in the Stark stronghold, minus the women, children, and brainiacs (hi Sam and Tyrion, sorry guys). Those people will be nestled safely in the underground confines of... wait, what? The Stark crypt?

I realize it's busy times in Winterfell, but did no one spend even a moment thinking about the implications here? The White Walker army is comprised of dead things. As they march and do their evil business, they create more dead things and grow their ranks.

Now, we don't know exactly how each wight comes into being, what the specific process is. Neither does anyone in Winterfell. But if you know an undead army is approaching, and you know the bodies of their victims end up joining their army, why oh why would you think a goddamn crypt could offer any protection?

Reddit gets it.

What does Game of Thrones do again and again that makes it such an effective nail-biter? It blows up safe spaces. It creates danger where there should be none, and then it smears gallons of blood across the walls. Why would the final season be any different?

There's even foreshadowing for this turn of events in the books. Consider this passage from one of the Jon chapters in A Game of Thrones:

Last night he had dreamt the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark he’d heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch-dark, his heart hammering.

Sure, the books and the show don't always line up. But I'm willing to bet they do in this case. There's plenty of evidence to support the theory. And lots of fans seem to agree.

And really, the MVP tweet that summarizes the overall reaction to this bold and exceedingly stupid plan:
