How long has the spider's game been going on for?

LONDON -- If there's one character who has arguably more influence than any of the others in Game of Thrones, it's Varys.

Like Littlefinger, the Spider is one of those sneaky types that specialises in manipulation and playing people off against each other; he's brilliant at getting others to do his bidding without ever getting his own hands dirty.

Following Season Six, we now know that Varys has been gunning for a Targaryen ruler for a long time -- but to what extent, exactly, can all the mad stuff that happened over the last six seasons in King's Landing be attributed to him?

Well, the latest theory floating around Reddit suggests that Varys has been working towards this particular goal for a very long time -- and that he may even have used Tyrion's trial as a means of getting Dany's future Hand of the Queen over to Pentos.

It makes sense, doesn't it? Once Varys had seen Tyrion's ability during his time as Hand, he must have decided that Tyrion was the perfect candidate to help Daenerys rule.

And when Shae didn't convince Tyrion to come to Pentos with her? Varys used the trial to manoeuvre Tryion into a tight spot that only he, Varys, could help him out of.

Helping Tyrion escape was good for Varys in several ways. Not only did it take Tywin (a proven tactician who may have been a hard foe for Daenerys to overcome) out of the equation, but it also threw King's Landing into complete chaos (leaving Cersei in charge, which further weakened the Lannisters for a future invasion). Crucially, it also meant that Tyrion was, for all intents and purposes, in Varys' pocket.

The theory seemed to go down well.

All in all, Varys is perhaps best summed up by the speech he made to Tyrion back in Season Two, before the guys were best buds.

"Threaten me again and I'll have you thrown into the sea," Tyrion tells Varys.

"You might be disappointed in the results," the Spider replies. "The storms come and go, the big fish eat the little fish and I keep on paddling."

Ultimately, everyone else in King's Landing is just a pawn in the spider's game.
