Luxury phone from China has crazy specs and a 7,000mAh battery

That's a lot of milliampere-hours.

One way to solve the battery life issues plaguing smartphone users ( (so, basically, everyone) these days is to go bigger. China's Gionee has done exactly that: its new luxury phone boasts a pretty outlandish 7,000mAh battery paired with some really good specs.

The Gionee M2017 is a 5.7-inch smartphone in a metal and leather case that, while fatter than your regular phablet, still manages to look quite elegant despite that enormous battery.

The rest of the specs aren't shabby, either: 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, dual rear cameras (with 12- and 13-megapixel sensors with 2x optical zoom), an 8-megapixel selfie cam and a fingerprint reader.

For some reason, the chipset that powers all this is the quite midrange Snapdragon 653, which makes the entire package a lot less desirable, if still perfectly capable.

According to Gionee, the phone should last for a few days of regular use or 26 hours of non-stop video, which is exactly what you need for that around-the-world plane trip you've been planning.

The Gionee M2017 is not the first phone with a huge battery. The Blu Energy XL and the Acer Liquid Zest Plus have 5,000mAh cells, while the Oukitel K10000 has an even bigger, 10,000mAh battery. It is, however, currently the most powerful smartphone with such a huge cell, mid-range processor aside.

The price in China, where the phone will launch on Jan. 6, starts at RMB 6,999 ($1,007).
