A touching video from an area devastated by an earthquake in Italy shows a 10-year-old girl being pulled alive from the rubble.

Almost 24 hours after the magnitude 6.2 quake hit central Italy, rescue workers looked through the debris in Pescara del Tronto and found the legs of a girl.

"You can hear something under here. Quiet, quiet," says one, as he removes dirt and debris with his bare hands.

The girl, identified by her first name in Italian media, is covered in dust and obviously looks distraught.

"Come on, Giulia, come on, Giulia. ... Watch your head," firefighters say as they carefully free her from the rubble.

Cheers break out and people applaud as she was pulled out.

Two women ran up the street yelling "She's alive!"

Chief firefighter Danilo Dionesei confirmed the girl was pulled out alive and was taken to a nearby hospital. He didn't immediately give any further details about her condition.

Pescara del Tronto is located some 160 kilometres northeast from Rome and is one of the three towns hardest hit. Italy's Civil Protection said the death toll was at 247 but the number of missing is uncertain given the thousands of holidaymakers in the area for summer's final days.
