General Motors already rolled out an all-electric car in the past year. By 2023, it plans to sell at least 20 vehicles running on only electric power.

The announcement Monday comes after Volvo, Ford, Toyota, Audi, and other companies committed to electric futures as well. And don't forget about early pioneer Tesla paving the way for electric cars.

GM has a short-term plan to introduce two all-electric vehicle in the next year and a half. In five years, it hopes to have an entire fleet of 20 battery-powered cars.

The company said it's learned a lot from the Chevrolet Bolt, GM's first all-electric vehicle.

"Although that future won't happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles through no-compromise solutions that meet our customers' needs," Mark Reuss, the company's executive vice president of product development, said in a statement.

The company's long game and commitment to zero emission vehicles includes research into battery technology along with hydrogen fuel cells.
