God of War launched to massive critical success, and, as we learned Thursday, record-breaking commercial success.

God of War sold 3.1 million copies in its first three days out, Sony announced Thursday, making it the fastest-selling PS4-exclusive game in the console's five-year history. Between April 20 and 22, God of War unseated Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which hit 2.7 million in sales in its first week.

God of War's success likely comes from the fact that it's basically beloved by everybody. The game is currently sitting at a 94 out of 100 on the review aggregate site Metacritic, and all of the positivity that poured out from critics even led the game's director Cory Barlog to tears.

Thanks to God of War's addictive combat, engrossing world and story, and its mature take on father-son relationships, it's a huge hit with the public too. People seem to have really connected with the new take on the historically over-the-top, violent, and hyper-masculine series.

The game is flying off the shelves with the same vigor that Kratos' axe flies through the bodies of his enemies.

With such an early surge in sales, God of War may just become the best selling PlayStation 4 game of all time if it keeps moving like this. God of War is certainly an early game of the year contender and could very well stand as one of the best game to come to the console.
