The early Google Nest thermostats are finally being left behind.

Google announced via its Nest support forum that it’s ending support for first and second-generation Nest Thermostats. That means no more updates and no more remote control through the app or Google Assistant. The move affects the original 2011 model, the 2012 second-gen model, and the 2014 European version. If you’re unsure which model you have, check the screen size: the earlier devices sport a compact 1.8-inch display, compared to the 3.25-inch panel on third-gen models and beyond.

Although Google is removing remote access, it’s not bricking these thermostats entirely. You’ll still be able to "adjust temperature, modes, schedules, and settings directly on the device itself," according to the company.

In the post, Google framed the move as a way to focus on supporting newer hardware, though it could be interpreted as a not-so-subtle nudge for users to upgrade. The company also says it has no plans to launch new thermostat models in Europe.

To soften the blow, Google is offering affected users a $130 discount on the Nest Thermostat (4th Gen) and 50 percent off the Tado Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit for European customers.
