There's a new version of Google Maps for Android, and it might just save you a few bucks in those roaming data charges.

From now on, Google Maps will let you switch the app to "Wi-Fi only" mode of operation, which won't download any data unless you're connected to a Wi-Fi network. You can enable the option, which will make the maps operational in "offline areas" when there's no Wi-Fi connection available, in the app's settings.

Once you turn on this feature, the app will warn you that a small amount of data might still be transferred, but it will be "significantly less" while on Wi-Fi only.

The app will now also let you store data on an external SD card, leaving your phone's main storage free for other uses. Since Google Maps can occupy quite a bit of storage space -- depending on how many offline areas you've designated -- this will be very useful for folks who are always struggling with storage space on their phones.

Finally, Maps will now show local Uber competitors as ride service options in several countries. People in certain cities in Indonesia will see GO-JEK rides; Grab rides will show up for some cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Gett, Hailo and MyTaxi rides will show up in some cities in Ireland, Poland, Italy, Austria, Russia and Israel.

The new features should be available on Android now; Google did not mention when they'll appear on iOS devices.
