Two years after Apple came out with its Family Sharing feature, Google announced a similar feature called Google Play Family Library, which allows sharing of TV, app, movie and book purchases on up to six Google accounts. It will work across Android and Chrome devices, but also on iPhones and iPads. The service itself is free to use.

Note, however, that users can't share music via Family Library. That still requires Google Play's Music Family Plan, launched last year, which works for up to six accounts, but for $14.99 a month.

The account requires one card to be the default for all purchases, but individual members can use their own as well. Each member can also set content as specifically for them, or open it up to share later. For help on adding a card, click here.

To sign up for the Family Library, go to your Google Play account, and go to Menu > Account > Family > Sign up for Family Library.

To add accounts, click Menu > Family > Manage family members > Invite family members. From here, you must specify a phone number or email address. Family members will then get a text or email with an invitation to join the family account, which they must accept before they can access the shared files.

Google Play Family Library is available in the US today, as well as in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and the UK.
