The next frontier for startups is urban tech

Grand Central Tech is helping startups reimagine cities.

Facebook already has 1 billion users. Apple has sold 1 billion iPhones. So what's left for tech companies to do?

According to the founders of the startup accelerator Grand Central Tech, the answer is in the real world.

The Manhattan incubator is the largest tech accelerator in New York, and its latest project is a startup space dedicated to urban tech.

"The way we think about urban tech is you either accept the city as it is or you think about how you're going to improve it," Grand Central Tech co-founder Matt Harrigan said in an interview on Mashable's Biz Please podcast.

Urban tech encompasses anything from clean energy and sustainability to Airbnb to Uber's self-driving cars.

Harrigan and his co-founder Charlie Bonello joined Mashable business editor Jason Abbruzzese and me to talk about the future of urban tech and why Grand Central Tech doesn't take any equity in its startups.

The accelerator launched the Hub, its space focused on urban tech, in partnership with New York City in September.
