On Saturday, August 6, Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini will make history when she participates in the women's 100 meter butterfly at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. It will be the first time an athlete has competed as a member of a team comprised of refugees.

As the the Olympics and the participation of Team Refugee Olympic Athletes (ROA) approach, there's a groundswell of support across social media for the six men and four women who make up the team.

And the squad has a new fan, a well known monster coated in blue fur.

The team will participate under the Olympic flag and be housed with other athletes in the Olympic Village. Members will also have a place of honor during the traditional "parade of nations" during Friday's Opening Ceremonies. The IOC will provide coaches and cover travel and other expenses via the Olympic Solidarity program.

And the team can count some big backers, including Grover and company, as part of its fan club. Sesame Street is joined in its support by groups like the ONE Campaign, Save the Children and the International Rescue Committee, as well as luminaries including actress Mia Farrow and Samantha Power, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Sherrie Westin, the EVP of Global Impact and Philanthropy of Sesame Workshop, told Mashable the clip is, "A wonderful way to highlight our interest and desire to help refugee children by raising awareness around the issue."

Earlier this year at the World Humanitarian Summit, Sesame Workshop announced its intention to develop programming for refugee children and their families. The clip below is just one example.

The children's show has a history of addressing tough issues. One episode in 1983 dealt with the death of the character Mr. Hooper (following the death of actor Will Lee who played him). There was also Kami, the HIV-positive character on Takalani Sesame, the South African version of the series.

In that way the show and Grover, a noted world traveler, are the perfect avenue for approaching the topic of refugees with children. "Looking at [issues] through the eyes of a child and helping children to understand difficult issues is something Sesame Street does like no other," Westin said.

As to the contentious political tone that has become part of the refugee conversation, Westin stressed that “Sesame Street’s DNA has always been about acceptance, inclusion, respect and understanding.”

But Grover isn't in this alone. Team Refugee can be followed across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, where photos and videos of the team have been going up as the athletes have trained for and arrived in Rio for the games.

As the athletes compete in Rio over the next two weeks, you can follow along and continue to show your support by hashtagging your social media posts "#TeamRefugees."

Once you get on board with support, be sure to catch the athletes in action in Rio. Here's the schedule for the 10 ROA team members.
