Happy Halloween!

Hm. "Happy" may be a bit too much in this, the year of our shared pandemic. But it is Oct. 31, the day of Halloween, and a little lockdown isn't going to stop people from dressing up. Especially since social media exists.

It may not be as easy to go trick-or-treating in 2020, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate all the hard work that went into crafting inventive costumes. People are still dressing up this year, and they're doing a bang-up job of it.

This is nothing more than an appreciation post for all the super Halloween costumes we won't get to see on the local streets in 2020. And that's a good thing! It means people are staying safe. Just wear a mask, be a responsible community member, and keep kicking ass. If we all take some personal responsibility in fighting this thing back, we can make Halloween 2021 the epic party it deserves to be.

So! On to the costumes. Viola Davis's daughter Genesis seemingly dressed as... her mom, Viola Davis, Oscar-winner. Perfect.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley used her considerable platform to celebrate a group of kids who turned to real-life heroes for costume inspo. You just love to see it.

One of the great Halloween twists every year is the "mundane costumes" trend that takes hold in Japan. You don't have to search long to find thread after thread of people dressing up as regular folks in regular situations.

Here's an especially epic-length round-up. You'll have to click through to see the whole thing.

Ava Duvernay's nephew gets all the candy this year. Is an OMG in order? I think so. OMG so cute.

I don't often find myself agreeing with Meghan McCain, but as a fellow new parent I have to stan the creativity on display here.

Lizzo also brought her A-game to Halloween. I can't embed her Instagram post here, but she dressed up as the fly from the Kamala Harris/Mike Pence debate. And her perfect caption? "FLYYYYY AF !"

A winner. Go see it for yourself.

There are better costumes out there, but here's Joe Biden dressing for the job he wants: U.S. president. He'll find out if he gets it sometime after the election ends on Nov. 3. GO VOTE.

Do you know Dodger, Chris Evans' adorable dog? It's not clear if Chris dressed up, but Dodger certainly did. And our timelines are that much more blessed as a result.

Elsewhere in celebrity dogs, Senator Elizabeth Warren's best bud Bailey did the thing as well. Like Dodger, Bailey is also a lion. But they're dogs. They both win by default, copycat or not.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin... put on a jester's hat. He looks like he's ready for Mardi Gras. But hey! Game of Thrones!

Next we have NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace doing a killer Among Us riff. Are you familiar with Among Us? That's the video game Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed on Twitch (with fellow Rep. Ilhan Omar!) earlier in October to get out the vote, with great success.

And lastly, here's one from my own library. The new baby's costume was, of course, Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian. (Sorry, Disney. I'm not calling Baby Yoda "The Child" when he's clearly a baby Yoda.)

I take no credit for this incredible costume that my wonderful partner put together over the course of the last week. She knocked it out of the park.

Happy Halloween!
