Everything you need to know about the new Harry Potter book

Even since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows dropped in 2007, fans have been clamoring for more -- a Marauders prequel, another story, anything that allows us to spend one more day at Hogwarts. (This desperation is why every JK Rowling tweet revelation is a news story.)

For those unaware, that day has finally arrived. It's not quite an eighth Harry Potter book in the traditional sense, but it is another story about Harry Potter, former boy wizard and current king of the internet. Beggars can't be choosers.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II is a script version of the play of the same name that just opened in London. The story -- based off an idea by Queen J.K. Rowling but actually scripted by Jack Thorne -- centers on events 19 years after the Battle at Hogwarts. It puts the action at the same time as the final book's epilogue (when Harry had a heart to heart with is son Albus Severus).

Below, for non-mega Potterheads, we're breaking down all you need to know going into this weekend.

What is this play about?

Cursed Child will center on Harry's children, particularly aforementioned middle child Albus Severus.

"It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children," the summary states. "While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places."

Why are there two parts?

The play runs approximately five hours, and is broken up into two parts that fans can view either back to back or on subsequent days.

Does this have anything to do with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

You may have heard about something else in the Harry Potter universe recently: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

That's a separate film project starring Eddie Redmayne with a script by JK Rowling (her first!). It is based on her 2001 "textbook" of the same name, which is just fun encyclopdia-esque entries about various animals in the wizarding world. The movie will follow magizoologist Newt Scamander (mentioned in the Potter books) around 1920s London, and will be released Nov. 18.

But they'll make Cursed Child into a movie too, right?

Undoubtedly. Warner Bros. trademarked the name earlier this month, which means they've got their eye on the long-term prize. But theater producers have to make their money, so don't expect one anytime soon. Do look for another production on Broadway in the next year or two.

Earlier this week, Barnes & Noble announced that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the chain’s most pre-ordered title since the last Harry Potter book, and that the script will likely be the biggest-selling book of the year.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child drops on Harry (and J.K. Rowling's) birthday, Sunday, July 31. There are parties planned at bookstores worldwide. All was well.
