Harvey's out; will Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski be the next to go?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted to revoke the lifetime membership of Harvey Weinstein in the wake of dozens of sexual misconduct allegations -- immediately prompting questions about whether Cosby and Polanski will be able to retain their memberships.

The decision to expel the executive came from an emergency meeting of the academy's 54-member board, which includes Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kathleen Kennedy, among other Hollywood icons.

According to the New York Times, the board voted "well in excess" of the two-thirds majority needed to oust a member.

"We [expel Weinstein] not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over," the academy said in a statement per the Times. "What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society."

Now, the organization faces pressure regarding the fates of Cosby and Polanski, both of whom are accused abusers.

More than 30 women have accused Cosby of misconduct. His trial on sexual assault charges ended in a mistrial in June, with a new trial date set for early next month. Roman Polanski pleaded guilty to a statutory rape charge in 1977, then fled the country before his sentencing. He now resides in France.

Both men remain members of the academy.

Weinstein is only the second person to face expulsion. The first was actor Carmine Caridi, who was ejected for lending out screeners in 2004.
