It's every mischief maker's worst nightmare: You're out on the town, getting up to some light-hearted fun, when suddenly you find yourself cornered by the police.

That's exactly the dire situation one "inebriated" hedgehog in New Zealand found itself in, after getting trapped in a yoghurt pot on Monday night.

The hedgehog was discovered by the Kiwi police, who described the troublesome critter as "looking very drunk and walking into things."

But rather than locking the lout up and throwing away the key, the coppers decided instead to help the hog out.

"After a brief foot pursuit the subject was cornered and the yoghurt pot removed," the cop's Facebook post said. "Crime prevention advice provided about going through other people's rubbish."

The post continued: "This is not the first time we've dealt with disoriented hedgehogs, but we hope the prevention advice given will see a decrease in hedgehog food container related incidents."

Let's hope this is indeed an all-important wake up call for the young hedgehog. Get your life back on track, mate. We're all rooting for you.
