Helicopter with at least 13 people on board crashes in Norway

The crash took place on the island of Turoey, near Bergen.

A helicopter carrying at least 13 people has crashed in Norway, according to police.

The crash took place on the island of Turoey, near Bergen, police spokesman Morten Kronen told The Associated Press

He said the chopper was "totally smashed" following an explosion and there were no signs of survivors.

Thick smoke was reported in the area of the incident, with people reportedly seen in the sea. 

Norwegian media posted photos of huge amounts of smoke billowing from the area of the crash.

Eyewitness Rebecca Andersen told the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang that the helicopter's "rotor blades came rushing toward us."

"Then we heard a violent explosion."

The Stavanger Aftenblad daily said the helicopter was on its way from an offshore oil field in the North Sea called Gullfaks B to Flesland airport.
