Mandatory high heels policy scrapped by firm following petition

LONDON -- A company that sent home a woman from her temp job for not wearing high heels has changed its policy. 

Nicola Thorp from Hackney, London, was sent home after she refused to wear shoes with a "2in to 4in heel."

She launched a petition calling for it to be made illegal for a firm to require women to wear heels at work.

The petition has already been signed more than 95,000 times, exceeding the 10,000 signature target required to get a response from government.

On Thursday, Portico -- the outsourcing company Thorp was working for -- changed its policy saying "with immediate effect all our female colleagues can wear plain flat shoes". 

Portico managing director Simon Pratt said the firm was "committed to being an inclusive and equal opportunities employer" and actively embraced "diversity and inclusion within all our policies".

Under current UK employment law, employees can legally dismiss employees who contravene an organisation's dress code if the employees have been given warnings, and enough time to comply with the dress code.
