Bernie Sanders will not request a recount of Missouri's Democratic primary results, conceding the state to rival Hillary Clinton.

Sanders told The Associated Press that the results of a recount were unlikely to change the allocation of the state's delegates and that he would "prefer to save the taxpayers of Missouri some money."

Clinton leads Sanders by just 1,531 votes in Missouri. Because the margin is so narrow, Sanders could have legally sought a recount.

With her win in Missouri, Clinton made a clean sweep of Tuesday night's five big primaries, pushing her closer to the Democratic presidential nomination.

The results of Missouri's Republican primary between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz is still unresolved.

Clinton's wins on Tuesday put her more than 300 delegates ahead of Sanders, not including superdelegates. Clinton also has a lead among superdelegates.

Sanders ended Tuesday night far behind Clinton in the delegate count. To capture the party's nominations, he would need to win a slew of upcoming states by improbably big margins.

Both campaigns said that they expect Sanders to win some states in the coming weeks, starting with Democratic contests in Utah, Idaho and Arizona.

Sanders has vowed to stay in the race, telling supporters in a fundraising email that he has "an extremely good chance to win nearly every state that votes in the next month."
