Can a bar open in an Australian city without a gimmick? Nice try. Of course not.

Sure there are oxygen bars and places where you drink out of test tubes, but watering holes inspired by television characters of years gone by are today's real winners.

Take the notorious George Costanza-themed bar that opened in Melbourne in late 2015, complete with drinks and toasted sandwiches inspired by Seinfeld. In short order, George's Bar won international attention, the praise of its namesake and sent one reviewer into a Costanza-esque existential tailspin.

There are plenty of television shows and films left to exploit, but it can be hard to come up with the correct combination of '90s nostalgia, indie cred and tasty treats. Instead, let the Shit Bar Idea Generator inspire you.

Its creator, Sydney-based designer Matthew Vernon, told Mashable Australia over email the project was prompted by the Twitter account Cook Suck. Apparently, the recipe is simple.

Sydney's bar culture has gone too far, Vernon said. "Most of these places are terrible, get an insane wave of hype after being featured on every single website, and then close down after people wake up to themselves and realise paying $22 for 3 pieces of burnt fried chicken and $9 for a 'craft beer' is idiotic," he wrote.

If a bar played "nothing but the Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 soundtrack," on the other hand, he'd be there every night.

Vernon said the generator only took him around two hours to build. "A lot of the options are actually things I'd enjoy to see in a bar. 28 Days are mad. So is that Simpsons episode with the Smashing Pumpkins," he wrote. "However the way the generator is built and strings the items together randomly is where it falls apart and actually starts to mirror just how idiotic bar culture has become lately."

Some are of the generator's pitches are so genius you have to wonder why no one suggested them already. South Park and donuts -- seems obvious. Others sound sort of dangerous. Once it's in there, you'll never get Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird" out of your head again. And combined with spicy "as fuck" chicken wings? No thank you.
