As rush hour was in full swing on Thursday, tweets filtered out with dramatic accounts from people on a New Jersey train.

The train failed to stop as it came into Hoboken Station in New Jersey, smashing into commuters standing on the platform and destroying parts of the train station. At least one person has been killed and more than 100 people have been injured, according to officials.

As the situation unfolded, many commuters spoke of their train going full speed toward the station of Hoboken, others shared photographs of mangled steel and commuters running for the lives.

Within the hour, thousands of tweets had spread across Twitter as people documented in real-time the unfolding situation.

It is currently unclear what caused the crash, but investigations are ongoing.

NBC reported Thursday that the train was not equipped with positive train control technology, which slows down a train if it exceeds a certain speed on a stretch of track. The U.S. Department of Transportation has a requirement that trains nationwide have the technology implemented by 2018.
