Here's how to catch the legendary bird trio in 'Pokémon Go'

You've gotta catch 'em all, remember.

So, after a full year of Pokémon Go, we finally, finally have some legendary Pokémon to catch.

Lugia and Articuno were released in raid battles on Saturday, following Chicago's Pokémon Go Fest. They've been popping up at the top of gyms across the world as part of the new Level 5 "legendary" raids.

So far they're the only two legendary Pokémon that have been released, out of a total of 9 legendaries and 2 mythic 'mon across Generations One and Two.

On Tuesday night Niantic released details about a couple more.

How to catch the legendary bird trio

Yep: if you're hoping to bag yourself a nice Articuno, you're going to need to get a move on. The iciest member of the legendary bird trio will stop being available on Monday 31 July. At this point it will be replaced by Moltres, which will be around for a week, and then Zapdos, which will also be around for a week.

We don't know what will come after that. It's possible Niantic will move on to the Gen 2's legendary dog trio, or they may go back to Articuno and repeat the cycle. It's worth noting that Articuno will almost certainly be back at some stage. Niantic can be cruel, but they're surely not cruel enough to put it in the game for a week and then remove it forever.

What to use against the legendary birds

If you want to have a pop at catching a legendary bird, the first thing you'll have to do is defeat it in battle. This is going to require a decent-sized group (probably around 8-10+ people, ideally, although maybe less if you're all strong players using the the right Pokémon).

Speaking of the right Pokémon, someone has created a handy infographic to show which 'mons work best against the birds (you can ignore Mewtwo and Mew at the top of the infographic for now, as they're not out yet):

CARD ID: 243122, CARD TYPE: Imgur

The TL;DR version: Tyranitar with stone edge is your new best friend, and will work well against all three birds.

Golem is also a strong counter for Moltres and Zapdos (he'll do damage against Articuno too, but will faint very quickly).

Happy hunting!
