Hulu joins the Marvel game with 'Runaways'

It used to be that Netflix had Marvel and The CW had DC, but now comics are making their way to Hulu with the upcoming Runaways.

According to Hulu:

The streaming service has picked up Marvel’s Runaways in its first series order with Marvel Television. The fan-favorite and groundbreaking comic book series will be brought to life on Hulu by the team behind The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Schwartz and Savage will serve as Co-Showrunners/writers and will executive produce the series along with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

Marvel’s Runaways is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe – their parents. The coveted cult classic explores the younger side of the Marvel Universe in a coming of age, new action series that will premiere on Hulu in the winter.

From the looks of it, they've stayed pretty close to the source material:

The characters look pretty faithful to the comics, apart from the fact that Chase looks like he's been rowing crew for four years and Gert, hailed for plus-sized representation in the comics, looks to be a lot closer to a classic Hollywood body type. The actors all look older than teens, but that's TV tradition.

Runaways is the latest in a slew of new Marvel properties heading to TV in the coming months: Freeform (which is part of the Disney-ABC family that owns Marvel) recently ordered two younger-skewing superhero shows from Marvel Television -- Cloak and Dagger, and New Warriors, which also feature teenage protagonists coming to grips with their abilities.

ABC is also adding to its superhero roster with Inhumans, which will get a first-of-its-kind premiere in IMAX theaters before debuting on the broadcast network this fall.

Runaways will premiere in 2018.
