The Hummer could be making a comeback as an electric pickup truck.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the Hummer name, once known for outrageous gas-guzzling and general douchebaggery, will be repurposed for a new battery-powered SUV from General Motors as early as 2022.

Rumors of the vehicle's second lease on life began swirling in summer 2019 when GM president Mark Reuss told reporters the company was considering Hummer as one of many possibilities for its "all-electric future." Unlike its predecessor, the new Hummer will not be a standalone brand, instead appearing as the first of several large, eco-friendly models available to consumers in the coming years.

The manufacturer is currently working on two electric programs — one focusing on small and midsize passengers models, and the other exploring full-size and off-road vehicles. The original Hummer was discontinued in 2009 following GM's bankruptcy announcement, mired in complaints due to its poor fuel efficiency and safety concerns.

The design for the new truck is set to be unveiled by Los Angeles Lakers all-star LeBron James (enlisted to promote the brand, per WSJ sources) via a Super Bowl ad in February, according to the WSJ report.

GM has not released an official statement on the matter, but the improved, electric Hummer is expected to be available as a pricey, luxury item in limited supply.
