See Hummer EV do its CrabWalk move on video

It moves sideways! Well, almost.

GMC's new Hummer EV is a beast in many ways — it's got 1,000HP and it has three electric motors that take it from 0-60mph in about three seconds.

But one of the weirdest — and coolest — new features the vehicle comes with is called CrabWalk. In CrabWalk mode, the Hummer EV can rotate all four wheels at the same angle by up to 10 degrees, and move diagonally. Yes, like a crab (though the diagonal movement is more reminiscent of a bishop in chess).

A month ago, GMC posted a teaser video of the feature in action, but it was only enough to catch a glimpse of what it looks like. Now, there are several new videos that show the Hummer EV in CrabWalk mode, and it's no spoiler to tell you that it's cool as ice.

In the video above, we see the massive Hummer EV traversing a narrow serpentine curve on a rocky road by engaging CrabWalk. From above, it looks like magic; the car just slides diagonally, as no other production car (that I've heard of) can.

The video also shows Extract Mode in action, which raises the car's suspension by up to six inches to overcome a big boulder.

A longer, more detailed video (above) gives us a much better look at both features, both in terms of what they look in practice, as well as how they're activated and shown through Hummer's infotainment system (which, by the way, is powered by Unreal Engine, no less).

Unfortunately, the first tranche of the Hummer EV, which will arrive in 2022, is already sold out. More variants will come out, but not before fall 2022.
