July is here, which means the height of Comic Con season is upon us. These annual nerd pilgrimages have grown over the last few decades from small gathering of devoted comics fans into massive entertainment extravaganzas, the physical manifestation of geek culture gone mainstream.

Fittingly our next pick for MashReads, Mashable's social book club, is A Hundred Thousand Worlds by Bob Proehl. He explores the world behind those conventions, and the artists and creators who make their livelihood there.

A modern The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, A Hundred Thousand Worlds follows various people as they travel from New York to LA on the convention circuit, exploring everything from the industry, storytelling and family. Central to the story are former sci-fi actress Valerie Torrey, slowly bringing her young son Alex back to the life and the ex-husband she ran from six years ago. Through Val and Alex, and the comic creators they encounter, Proehl weaves a story that digs into the heart of what comics and storytelling itself can do.
