Struggling to find acceptance from some, India’s first transgender college principal has quit from her job.

Dr. Manabi Bandopadhyay, who served as the principal (headmistress) of Krishnagar Women's College, has submitted her resignation, District Magistrate Sumit Gupta said.

Bandopadhyay cited "non-cooperation" from a section of teachers and students for her decision to resign. She said this behaviour from her colleagues and students instilled tremendous mental stress, adding that her sexual identity overshadowed all of her decisions.

Bandopadhyay, 50, became the first transgender principal of an education institute in India in June 9, 2015. She spearheaded the operations at the college for more than a year-and-a-half. She had undergone a sex change operation in 2003 while working as a professor in a college in the same district.

In an earlier interview, Bandopadhyay lambasted at the Indian society for torturing and physically intimidating her at every walk of the life. Inspite all of the challenges, she earned a doctorate.

Talking about her move to call it quits, she said, "I faced a lot of legal notices from their end. I had come to this college with new hopes and dreams but I was defeated."

"All of my colleagues went against me. Some of the students went against me. I tried to bring back discipline and an atmosphere of education in the college," Bandopadhyay added.
